2016 Honda Odyssey LX vs 2016 Chrysler Town & Country

While Chrysler may have invented the minivan back in 1984, plastering wood paneling on the side to mask that it was not a station wagon, the Town & Country has fallen from minivan dominance. Other players, such as the Honda Odyssey have stepped into the ring and has ran circles around the OG.
Honda can seat seven to eight passengers while the Town & Country can only squeeze in seven. And that is the fundamental difference between the two. Side by side, the 2016 Honda Odyssey towers over the 2016 Chrysler Town & Country in size. The Odyssey is wider, longer and hence roomier, which matters when hauling a Little League baseball team.
But the Honda has one trick up its sleeve that someone likely got a promotion for — a vacuum in the rear cargo area. Oh my geez, such a wonderful idea. You can sell the 2016 Odyssey on this alone. Minivans are used to haul families, usually families with lots of kids. Kids are messy. They spill things. A lot of things. French fries, Cheerios, and more French fries. Carting the vacuum out to the driveway every time Timmy makes a mess is arduous. Not anymore, thanks to Honda’s in-van vacuum.
The balance of power and fuel efficiency in minivans is crucial. Families have budgets, and the last thing they need to be worried about is overspending on gas. Power matters, but at what cost?
Power for the 2016 Honda Odyssey comes from a 3.5-liter V-6 making 248 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque. It returns a fuel economy rating of 19 miles per gallon in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.
The 2016 Chrysler Town & Country has a 3.6-liter V-6 making 283 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Yes, the Town & Country comes with more power, but even while being smaller in footprint, seating only seven to the Odyssey’s eight, it gets abysmal fuel economy for a modern minivan — 17 mpg city and 25 mpg highway. There are full-size pickups that get better fuel economy than that today. Both the Honda and Chrysler have six-speed automatic transmissions.
Both the Honda and Chrysler will get you to where you are going in a hurry, because when there are kids involved, you are almost always running late to something. The Honda will just do it more efficiently, saving you money and stops at the gas station.

Packing It Tight
One of the most crucial aspects of a minivan is cargo capacity. How much junk can you stuff in the back? Thanks to its larger size, the 2016 Odyssey offers up to 38.4 cubic-feet of cargo space. That is significantly more than Chrysler’s 33 cu.-ft. That is several more bags of groceries.
Is There a Need for That?
Warranties are an important part of automobile ownership. Sometimes, things just go wrong for whatever reason. We expect a lot from our cars, and minivans especially live demanding lives. Things break, wear out or are flawed. It can happen with anything we buy.
Both the 2016 Honda Odyssey and 2016 Chrysler Town & Country offer 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranties and 5-year/60,000 warranties on the drivetrain. However, Chrysler, unsettlingly, provides a rust warranty.
This is unsettling because most manufacturers do not provide such a warranty. Rust proofing has come a very long way over the last few decades. While rust may have been a problem in the 1980s, the automakers have pretty much figured out how to stop it. Except for maybe Chrysler, which feels necessary to offer one. Keep this in mind when comparing the Town & Country to the Odyssey.

2016 Honda Odyssey is the winner!
The One Minivan to Rule Them All
So let us say the spouse made you sell your sports car because some offspring is on the way. You do not want to admit it, but a minivan is in your future whether you like it or not. Getting kids in and out of a two-door sports car is impractical. And a pain. Which do you choose? The 2016 Honda Odyssey or the 2016 Chrysler Town & Country?
That is an easy one, obviously. There is a reason the Honda Odyssey is on top of the minivan mountain. With seating for up to eight, a massive cargo area and styling — something the slab-sided Town & Country lacks — the Odyssey seals the deal by focusing on the needs of its passengers, the most important aspect of what a minivan should be doing.
With fuel efficiency mindfulness, and Honda refinement and reliability (no rust warranty needed here), a the 2016 Odyssey is an investment for the future. You want something that will last and be dependable, and Honda provides that with its 2016 Odyssey minivan. You could not pick a better winner.
